Summer Leadership Institute - Elementary School Teachers

Elementary Teacher InstituteSummer Leadership Institutes for Elementary School Teachers in Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM), have been held since 1994. This is the only long-term professional development program in STEM exclusively for DC teachers. Participants are grouped by grade for most experiences—early childhood, grades 2-3, and grades 4-5 —and learn instructional methods and content adapted to each grade level. Teachers experience hands-on activities with grade-appropriate materials and content; work with FOSS kits adopted by DCPS is included.

Fascinating presentations by STEM professionals and scientists along with occasional field trips enliven the summer experience. Teachers learn and practice Lesson Study. Full attendance is expected. The Leadership Institute instructors are CASE Mentor Teachers. Participant performance for graduate credit is assessed by the Mentor Teachers with the supervision of the CASE professional staff.

CASE Mentor Teachers are D.C. teachers who have successfully completed at least one Summer Leadership Institute and received additional training from CASE staff. They have deep experience teaching science through inquiry and leading the summer institute. Each year, outstanding participants may be invited to join CASE as future Mentor Teachers.
