Acids and Bases
The pH factor: Miami Science Museum web site. Introductory level. Teacher's guide contains lesson plans based on constructivist and investigative laboratory-learning approaches. Recommended by the web site for elementary and middle school levels. However, the site is attractive and a fun review for older students since it connects with experiences outside of a classroom. Explore pH is an interactive meter that shows reactions with pH papers as well. |
The pH scale derives from the dissociation constant for water. This site, from the University of British Columbia, Canada, contains a tutorial on pH. Real chemistry with mathematics, but clear. You will need the Quicktime plug-in to view the animations. |
More about the pH scale, with numerous examples of how to calculate pH. Has a pH calculator on the bottom of the page. |
The power of Hydrogen (pH scale simulation). Sliding scale that shows changing hydrogen ion concentration as decimal, and as a exponent. Requires Shockwave plug-in. |
Extraction of natural pH indicators from fruits, vegetables and flowers. From the Woodrow Wilson Teachers Fellowship, designed for teachers. |
Chemistry of acids and bases. Has a linked look-up table so you can calculate pH of weak acids and bases from their concentrations and dissociation constants. |
