Curious Men and Boys

Curious men and boys watch a photograph being taken. The ‘spirit screen’ seen here was placed in front of the town gateway to block the approach of evil spirits, which were believed to be able to travel only in a straight line. The (apparently new) screen is decorated with a mythical creature called quilin and moon (yang and yin) and various auspicious symbols. (probably Shanxi Province)
