Galilee Ault's voyages: |
[Page 5] I went back aboard after breakfast and got another suit case full of stuff that I had to have to wear. All else seemed to be safe enough on board. She had settled on a sort of incline + the starboard side was up out of water. She was pumped out + floated about 7 Sat. night. Divers patched her up temporarily. The main holes were in her side + her prow. The projecting ledge of the breakwater (see vert. sect.) cut a long hole in her side (about 10 ft) + she pounded her nose on the sharp corner + steps of the boat landing, breaking her prow for 12-15 ft. It may delay us a couple of weeks. She is in dry dock now being repaired. I spent Sunday down there, cleaning up the instruments that got soaked. I stripped off + went below + unearthed (unwatered rather) the Magnetometer. It was in an awful mess. Salt water seems to eat things right up. A good many of our stores were spoiled. My trunk, etc. Taking everything into consideration we were pretty lucky. We were in no particular personal danger. We might have been had we gone straight onto the breakwater from our first position. |
